Grief and Loss

How do we define grief and loss?

Grief is your natural response to loss.

Loss can be:

  • death of a loved one

  • ending of a meaningful relationship

  • death of a pet

  • loss of a pregnancy

  • loss of health due to illness

  • loss of employment

  • loss of a major role/identity: such as retirement, children moving

Grief has no set pattern and each of us experiences loss in a unique way.

We might ask ourselves questions similar to:

  • How long will this last?

  • Will I ever be the same again?

  • Why has this happened to me?

  • What can I do with everything I’m feeling and thinking?
